Three men allegedly posing as FBI agents robbed a home in Burbank. Police said they made off with thousands of dollars in cash.

The incident happened on the 1000 block of Fairmount Road, just south of DeBell Golf Club.
Police said the suspects were wearing ski masks and had badges identifying themselves as FBI agents when they barged into the home after midnight Wednesday.

When they got inside, the suspects made the man, wife and teenage son get down on the ground. Then, they demanded cash and forced the wife to show them where it was
It appeared the robbers knew what they were looking for. Authorities said the men went straight for a briefcase that contained possibly up to $20,000. They also grabbed some jewelry. The suspects took off on foot.
"To pick a house out of nowhere, it just raises suspicious with the police department," said Burbank police Sgt. Robert Quesada.

A person inside the home was slightly injured by one of the suspects but is expected to be OK.
Neighbors in this quiet community can't believe it happened here.
"This is very concerning. I was just texting my friend that you're really never safe anywhere," said neighbor Don Valenciano.

Burbank police do not have a lot to work with as the suspects hid their faces with masks. Authorities do believe that the men were in their 20s. The incident remained under investigation.
Police are hoping someone in the neighborhood saw something but many slept through the robbery. Residents said they will now take extra precautions.

"You check your windows once or twice. I'm glad I have a dog here," said a neighbor. "It's a little wake-up call for everybody here."

Anyone with information was asked to call Burbank police at

Can you really learn to defend yourself by using a DVD?

The short answer is YES!

In the early days of “long distance learning” much of what was put out was very substandard and in some cases down right disgusting. Historically this lead the general public to be very hesitant to purchase video tapes from martial artists who didn’t understand how to produce a good video product. This gradually started to change but then there was a rush to sell all kinds of martial arts.

Many of the martial arts that were sold on the web were just sport arts masquerading as a combat art. The general public had no idea that learning a kata or set of martial arts moves wouldn’t save their life. Great exercise as such but of little real value in combat. Now days, I would have to say 90 percent of what is on the market is made farley well but still the real question is the value to a real combat situation.

Training defence has to be approached on several levels. The first one is the nature of the DVD you are purchasing. Is it really good for combat or is it a sport art claiming to be a combat art? Even mixed martial arts isn’t a combat art, it’s a sport. You have no business being on the ground in a submission hold, when you are in a combat situation. You need to dispatch your opponent as fast as possible. You need to disarm them and take their weapons from them, and very possibly, use it on them and or their criminal friends invading your home.

Personal defence classes can be taught via a good DVD. As mentioned above the subject matter is very important but also is the construction of the DVD. With the development of the long distance learning structure many of today’s DVD’s are of excellent quality. I personal develop mine with a very distinct structure in mind. I let you see the technique at full speed, and then I do a stop frame action at each important point, and then show you in slow motion, then twice more at regular speed. This is how I did the USMC martial arts program disks. It’s an excellent way to teach technique and keep everyone on the same page. However, this technique isn’t the only good long distance learning technique. I’m sure there are others out there that can produce equal results; I just have not seen them.

Self defense for women class or class’s should also be done in this fashion. It comes down to it that both the subject matter and the design of the long distance learning media must be in synch and appropriate for your needs. You must do a good Google search on the author of the media to prove to yourself that the material you are going to learn will in fact be helpful to you in a combat situation, easy to learn, and that you have a money back guarantee if you don’t like the quality of the material or the subject matter its self. These are very important things to remember when you purchase DVDs for long distance learning.

On closing, it’s really important to choose the right material to study for your training defence. What you need to understand is that in a home invasion or if you get attacked on the street, you usually only get one shot at being right with your techniques and thus to save your life you have to take this very seriously. You won’t usually get a second chance to save your life. Therefore, the subject matter is crucial and so is the construction of the long distance learning media. So, when you go out on the web and purchase, do your homework and find the material you need and a good DVD to help you learn it. And above all things, get a money back guarantee!

Girl, boyfriend charged with killing her parents; bodies found in shallow graves in Norwalk, Long Beach

Yet here is another home invasion.. this time one victim at a time. One at home and the other one when they came home. Rules of engagement should be worked on, plans made, and home self defence training set up...

Master Peter Brusso

Girl, boyfriend charged with killing her parents; bodies found in shallow graves in Norwalk, Long Beach: From the Associated Press:

A teenage couple from Compton have been charged with killing the girl's parents and burying them in shallow graves in Norwalk and Long Beach.
Los Angeles County prosecutors say 15-year-old girl Cynthia Alvarez and 16-year-old Giovanni Gallardo were charged Friday as adults with counts of murder with special circumstances.
They're jailed and face life in prison if convicted.
Prosecutors say they killed the girl's mother, 58-year-old Gloria Villalta, last week in her Compton home, hid the body and then stabbed and beat her stepfather with a bat when 51-year-old Jose Lara came home.
The mother was found buried Saturday in vacant lot in Norwalk. Lara was uncovered Thursday in Long Beach.
Prosecutors say the killings were prompted by friction between the girl and her parents, partly over her relationship with Gallardo.

Coroner rules Walnut man's death a homicide

Ok people.. there are becoming so many of these its not funny. I have been writing, blogging, and talking up a storm on this trend of home invasion. The rules of engagement must be worked out, a plan for your families safety, and weapons plus training has to happen or you can end up like this poor family. At least purchase and learn the defenders, self defense weapon and have them handy. Don't wait for life to give you this lesson before you get a chance to study the lesson plan. Do it today and make a commitment to purchase a Self Defense Weapon, start reading at the site about the rules of engagement, and get a plan together.

Coroner rules Walnut man's death a homicide: WALNUT -- A man found fatally stabbed at his Walnut home Wednesday, where his estranged wife was also found stabbed and badly wounded, was killed, coroner's officials said.
George Mora, 47, died from stab wounds and an autopsy ruled the death to be a homicide, Los Angeles County Coroner's officials said.
Sheriff's investigators have said they're still investigating what took place between the couple at the home in the 21600 block of Brookside Court, and it was unclear who may have been the aggressor in the domestic attack.
As of Friday, detectives had not been able to speak with the injured woman, 43-year-old Socorra Mora, due to her medical condition, Lt. Matt Burson of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide Bureau said.
It remained unclear Saturday how Socorra Mora suffered her stab wounds.

Off-duty deputy shoots burglary suspects in Cerritos

This isn't the first time I have heard of tented house robberies but this is a wonderful outcome! A bit off topic but still a house invasion story. It turns out, and I didn't know this before, that when you tent a house you have to put the address up on the web showing the public that there is poison being used at a particular address and stay away. Well, crooks know where to look for these addresses and go put on a mask then help themselves to your stuff. Brilliant, so if you have your house tented, best to camp out on the property, if possible, and protect your home. Home self defence comes with a price tag. I hope you enjoy this article... The massive power outage in San Diego County

As we saw this last week in Southern California most of San Diego County was without power for more than 12 hours. No house alarms would function, no ATM machines would perform, and if you desired to get anything such as water or ice you had to pay in money, cold hard cash that was it. This is the worst time to have to prepare for a disaster, that is when you're in the middle of a disaster. Equally genuine is your self-defense and/or the weapons that you might use for your self-defense, now is the worst time to figure out you don't have any and you need some.

House invasion is even more likely in the course of a organic disaster than ever prior to. If you have some thing of worth, this kind of as food and water, and others don't have it, we'll guess who's coming to dinner. I listen to a key radio station located in San Diego and they broadcast reside with no commercial interruptions during the power failure. Folks had been calling in, mostly on their land lines visible seemed to work, and told their power outage stories.

Many of the stories had been of course lack of preparedness for a disaster, such as dead flashlight batteries and even in some instances no way to open canned foods due to the fact they had electric can openers. I guess I never knew that you could take a hefty knife and gradually open a can but then once again I'm a survivalist. We lost our electrical power way out in Palm Springs, Indio, Palm Desert, at the worst time achievable in the middle of the day of a massive heat wave. Luckily, a extremely little community out around the Salton Sea had power when no 1 else did. Even in some areas in San Diego they had been suggesting you boil your water as they are with the chance of sewage contamination.

If you feel about a natural disaster, a energy outage doesn't generally come to thoughts but its criminals delight as alarms don't operate in the police are rather busy. Residence invasions grow to be far more practical for the criminals in natural disasters. such as we saw this week in San Diego. Not only do you want to worry about how you're going to defend your property, your family, your loved ones, but you also need to be concerned about how you're going to feed them. In a residence invasion are usually not a organic disaster and for that reason your sole objective is to repel the attack through individual defence weapons. In a normal disaster you got to find out to survive and also to safeguard your food stocks and your residence. It compounds the problem dramatically.

So if we can take a lesson from San Diego and that is to be ready for a natural disaster and also, now is the time, to take your residence invasion plans and place them in action. You need to have a self-defense weapon or several as I talk about just before, prepared to go before you actually need to have them (self defence item). Now is the time to seriously consider how you would deal with a organic disaster and a home invasion at the very same time. Do not wait for the natural disaster to hit you or your property to be invaded, put your home self defence plans in action nowadays.

Harbor Officers Attacked by Man Wielding a Cane

Now... this is very interesting as it shows us the need to have multiple weapons for our home self defence! As many of use look at the taser for a possible self defence item in our mix of home self defence weapons, you can see from the professionals here that they carry a mix of weapons, from less than lethal to lethal. So consider this article when you are thinking of your personal defence weapons choices.

Master Peter Brusso

Harbor Officers Attacked by Man Wielding a Cane:
Los Angeles: Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) patrol officers from Harbor Area were attacked by a suspect armed with a broken cane.

On August 25, 2011, just after 11:10 p.m., Harbor Area Officers responded to a radio call of a “Screaming Man’ in 100 Block of West D Street in Wilmington. When they arrived, they heard screaming coming from the rear of an apartment building. As the officers walked around to the rear of the building, they saw a man who was screaming and breaking the windows of a two- story apartment.

The officers immediately requested back up and proceeded to the apartment. Once inside, they were confronted with a man armed with a cane that had been broken at the hook and had a very sharp edge. The officers ordered the suspect to drop the sharp cane, but did not respond and instead attacked one of the officer’s by striking him repeatedly with the cane. The officers fired the TASER, which struck the suspect in the upper torso. The suspect a 30-year-old Black male, 6’ tall, 250 pounds failed to respond to the TASER and continued his attack on the officers, pinning one of the officers against the wall, while continuing to strike him with the sharp end of the cane. The partner officer at this time drew his service weapon and an officer involved shooting occurred.

The suspect went down, but still attempted to strike at the officers. The officers were able to subdue the suspect and take him into custody.

Los Angeles Fire Department personnel responded and transported the suspect to a local area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

One officer received minor injuries as a result of the incident. He was treated at the scene and released. The cane was recovered at the scene.

LAPD Harbor Area detectives are investigating the initial crime and LAPD Force Investigation Division personnel are investigating the officer involved shooting.

The investigation will ultimately be reviewed by the Chief of Police, the Office of the Inspector General and Board of Police Commissioners for compliance with the Department’s use-of-force policy which states that an officer’s use-of-force actions must be objectively reasonable.

Additionally, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Justice System Integrity Division will conduct a comprehensive review of the facts of the officer-involved shooting.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to call Harbor Area Detectives at 310-726-7906. During non-business hours or on weekends, calls should be directed to 1-877-LAPD-24-7 (877-527-3247). Anyone wishing to remain anonymous should call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (800-222-8477). Tipsters may also contact Crime Stoppers by texting to phone number 274637 (C-R-I-M-E-S on most keypads) with a cell phone. All text messages should begin with the letters “LAPD.” Tipsters may also go to LAPDOnline.org, click on "webtips" and follow the prompts.

Doing a Burglar Walk-Around

I read a lot of article looking for something worth while. This on has some good advice on home self defence as it applies to the physical side of things. One thing that it really points out is the fact of having, or rather not letting the burglars see inside your home, like window shopping. A sight barrier is always a good idea and this also means when you are home. I'm going to be doing some articles on home security systems in the very near future as they are an integral part of your home self-defense. I hope you enjoy this article.... Peter Brusso

Doing a Burglar Walk-Around:
Part of making sure that your home is safe from a home invasion is choosing a good home security system. With the right home security system installed, any potential burglar in his right mind is going to approach your home and then just move on to the next one. Burglars don’t want to have to overcome a home security system; they want to get in and get out fast.

If you want to make sure your home is fully protected, you need to think a little bit like a burglar. Take a walk around and through your home, with the following things in mind:

  • Look for places to hide. Can a burglar stand on your front stoop and be hidden from the road? That’s not a good thing. Consider changing some of your landscaping around to allow for a clear view of doors and windows.
  • Look for things to steal. Can burglars see into that big picture window in your living room and tell that you’ve got thousands of dollars in high-end stereo equipment? Consider moving valuables away from view, or keeping the curtains closed.
  • Test your doors and windows. Are the doors and windows stable? If a burglar can easily kick your door in, a deadbolt doesn’t do you much good. Consider prying gently on your windows and doors using a screwdriver. Don’t do it too hard; you’re just feeling to see if they have any give at all. If so, identify and fix those weak spots.
  • Walk down your street. Compare your house and yard with those of your neighbors. Are there things that would entice a burglar? Are there things in your neighbors’ yards that will cause the burglar to pass by? Do everything you can to make your home unattractive to a burglar (without making it unattractive overall, of course).
  • Look for visible signs of your security system. While a sticker in the window that says your home is protected doesn’t necessarily keep out burglars, it doesn’t hurt. As a matter of fact, having visible security systems in place will reduce some of those crimes of opportunity. Don’t rely on fake cameras or stickers, but do make sure the burglar knows he’s being watched.

The 5 stupid issues folks do with their house self defense

With the economy as poor as it is, and getting worse every day we have seen a rise in robberies and home invasion. Its a sad factor to say that if you are lucky sufficient to keep your house were noticed much more robberies than ever prior to this day, and it doesn't appear like its going to be getting a lot far better. So let's look at the 5 stupid issues people do about their residence self defense.

The first stupid factor is to think that a house invasion or robbery won't occur to you . If you examine it, why do we obtain house insurance, or any insurance at all? It is simply because we know there's a opportunity that one thing bad will happen to us and we want to have the capacity to recover. And what I mean is a financial recovery notwithstanding an emotional recovery as well. So the very first thing you should do is choose that you will do or you will look at your residence self defense technique.

The second factor you must do is to take a look at your physical security. Do all your windows have good locks? Do your doors have dead bolts and excellent locks? Sometimes upgrading these locking devices is some of the simplest things you can do for your own house self defense.

The third thing that you need to do is get a excellent alarm system. A excellent alarm, several times saves you from home invasion or robberies, simply because the criminals know that they have a finite quantity of time when they break into your home. They understand, comprehend that the authorities will be responding in brief order; which assists, in many times, they can only grab the straightforward stuff and they can't work on discovering other items. For example; if you have a safe they may try to pull it up and take it with them, or drill into the safe and they would only do that if they had the time to do so. So an alarm can acquire for you some deterrence just since they know the clock is ticking when they break in. The other aspect about an alarm is that if there are two houses side-by-side, one with an alarm method and the other doesn't have 1, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know which one the bad guys will break into.

The fourth factor that you should do is have a house invasion or robbery response strategy. These two items are uniquely different from one another and will be a topic of an additional post. Nevertheless, a residence invasion plan basically maps out your strategy on how to repulse or manage a home invasion. At times its with weapons and other times it might be moving to a safe room in your home. Yes, I said a secure room, excellent home invasion strategies create a safe room with a really secure door and typically some kind of weapon inside. You moved to the safe room while the robbers or home invasion criminals ransack your home but at least you and your family members are secure in one room.

The fifth thing you should do is decide on what aggression level you're willing to repel a residence invasion or robbery. Particularly, do you start out with a handgun or a shotgun for long-distance discouragement and then move into close quarter weapons like machetes and knives. There is often the opportunity of having a taser, pepper spray, or a self defense weapon known as a “defender” in the mix as properly.

So in conclusion, above outlines the five stupid points individuals do or don't do for their home self defense. It is entirely up to you how and at what level you will engage the possibility of a residence invasion and/or robbery.

Master Peter Brusso

Sunday, July 31, 2011

The several things to consider when it comes to your home self defense.

First, you have to decide the aggression level you are willing to commit to. What I mean here is that you have to live with yourself when it comes down to how much damage to another human being you are willing to live with. Now realize that in a home invasion or home robbery, the bad guys are not there to fix you dinner and or tuck you into bed at night with warm coco. They usually mean to steal from you at the minimum and they have no issue harming you in the process. So you have to decide what level you are willing to commit to in your own self defense. Once you have decided that, then you can start to understand your “layered” options for your own home self defence. If you are not willing to take a life then a fire arm is out of the question. Also, if you are willing to risk the death of your attacker, then tasers might also be off the table.

Second, with your “rules of engagement” defined, you next have to look at your home self defence as a layered strategy. What I mean here is that you pick weapons or tools that span across the range of attack. Specifically, you want to have some long distance weapons, medium range weapons, and up close range weapons in your mix of tools.

Third thing you need to do is form a plan of attack, so to speak. Run through several scenarios of your response to the bad guys. By examining these scenarios you are best able to place your weapons where you can get at them. This will give you a fighting chance.

In closing, get your act together for a day will come where you will be tested. As the economy worsens those that are fortunate to have a home, will become more and more a target. As a minimum you should consider getting a defender or self defense weapon!
